As a creative, do you believe that it takes courage to embark on your dream? What personality traits do you possess that make your career a success?
This quote couldn't have been more accurate especially for us, fellow creatives.
I remember many wisdom that my mom has impart on me and most of them I took it to heart, except for one: which is "don't get into the field of art, there is no money in it. Bless my mother's heart, I know she meant well. But no matter how much I tried to choose a different career path, I always landed in some kind of artistic field because that is where my strength lies.
When I chose art as my career, I had high hopes, my main inspiration was to do what I am passionate about and of course the ignorant bliss of thinking that I am capable of the impossible got me started.
After 18 years in the art field, it has it's moment like any career, there is some jubilation and some disappointment. I have traveled the road of an artist in various degrees, including selling my art in art shows, through galleries, co-op, online and owning my own gallery.
None of them has been easy but have you ever heard that art is an easy business? I knew it was going to be challenging but not until I walk the path of an artist do I truly learn the word Persistence and Courage.
Artists are a different breed, we've got to really love art. The passion of creating got to outweigh all practicality. We also need to believe in ourselves enough to continue on our creative journey, we are that candle that persist to live in the wind. Artists also believe more about passion than wealth. Not to say you can't be a wealthy artist on your own merit but most artists do it for the love and if we are fortunate if we can make a pretty good living doing it.
Remember fellow artists, do it for the love of your craft and nothing else. When you love something so deeply you will find a way to make it work. But ignorance bliss is not the way to cultivate your career, learning and immersing is the only way to cultivate your career.
Throughout my career, I've learnt that we need to keep working on our skills and introduce new medium and new ideas into our repertoire so that we are always breaking new grounds and sustaining our love for art.
I have also learnt that marketing is a huge part of my success. And no matter how much I love to be in my studio, it is not conducive to making it into a business. I have to immerse myself into the community, communicate with my audience, learn to talk about my art and having the confidence to explain my work to strangers. As an artist I also have to be consistent in producing work.
So if I were to look at my wealth, I have to say I have more than most people because I am living my dream and an inspiring and creative life. Since becoming an artist I have learnt a lot about myself and about the art business and in the process I became an entrepreneur. As an artist, I have more than survived, I have blossomed.
Most of all creatives, we need to be brave. We need to find ways to make our art business work, we need to put on our marketing hat and create a career for ourselves. Persistence, courage, passion, hard work, , positive thoughts need to be in our vocabulary.
An art career is more than our talent, it encompasses everything that I have mentioned. So my dear fellow artists, if you have chosen art as your career, you must be a passionate, courageous, persistent, talented and mighty positive person. And I congrats you for joining the Artists world, may we learn from each other continuously.
