This piece is part of Ting Yuen’s Artist Diary Series.

The First Nations create totem poles to honor their ancestors. It’s their way of knowing where and to whom they belong to. I painted the woman sitting on top of the totem pole as a symbol of another root that descends from that particular clan.  I believe we are all different in so many ways but as we get older, our roots deepen and our creed flourishes. I  have lived in five different diverse countries and when I was younger I thought I was westernized and that my heritage does not belong to me but as I get older, I realize that most of who I am and the knowledge that I have inherited in my life derives from the roots of my ancestors. I am proud of my ancestry and how it has shaped my life.
